Best overall: Tom Clancy’s rainbow six siege

Rainbox Six Siege is a 5v5 team based shooter that pits two well armed teams against one another in online matches. Unlike many game that rely simply on one set of characters attacking the other, this game has one team defending a specific location, while the other tries to break in and take out the operators on the opposing team.

Unlike many other FPS games in the genre, Rainbox Six Siege puts an emphasis on more strategic, team-based gameplay. For the first minute of each match, both teams have a small objective. One team will try to fortify their location, setting traps and shoring up walls to make them harder to breach. Meanwhile, the other side sends out drones trying to figure out what their opponents are doing. In just about every way, this is a game that rewards and demands team work from players. It’s definitely a game that is best for friends or a group to play together.

The levels are large, but dense and deliver a destructible setting. You can break through walls entirely, or punch out holes to give yourself a better line of sight. There are also several different modes of play, each requiring a different skillset. There are over a dozen different maps and it takes time to learn the layout of every section. The in-game store also has hundreds of items you can use to personalize your character, from weapon skins to operator outfits. You can purchase them with the in-game currency called Renown which you recieve at the end of each match you play.

Overall, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege delivers an excellent FPS. With a variety of operators to play, levels to learn, and a team to work with to achieve your goals, you get everything that makes the genre great all in one excellent package.

You play Prey as Dr. Morgan Yu, a scientist working on the Talos 1 Spacestation researching aliens called Typhon. Through experimentation on the Typhon, the doctor is researching neuromods which enhance the natural abilities of humans. If it sounds like something might go terribly wrong, you’d be right because it isn’t long before a Typhon break out and take over the space station.

Much like other retro-futuristic games, Prey delivers a world that looks and feels real. The Talos Spacestation is placed in an alternate 2032 where President Kennedy was never assassinated. It manages to mesh both super-retro elements, like a breakroom that could have been pulled right from the 1960s, with super futuristic elements, like the medical bay and space station itself. It creates this juxtaposition of setting and tension with a white clean exterior meant to draw you in, while it hides a dangerous interior that you’ll need to survive.

The combat isn’t amazing overall; for the most part it just feels a bit lacking in relation to the rest of the gameplay. You do get access to different weapons to fight through the many Typhon as you try to unravel the mystery of what is going on in this space station. There is plenty to uncover too, with emails, audio logs, and the actual people who live on the station all adding to to the depth of the story and the world within.

Return to the world of Halo with four games in one packagae with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. You get all four numbered games, giving you the core of excellent Halo experiences with remastered graphics and original gameplay that you remember and love.

The Master Chief Collection starts by delivering the core Halo games: Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4. They’ve all gotten some updates to graphics, and Halo 2 in particular got a serious digital remaster to make it as playable as possible for new fans. While the collection doesn’t include later games like Halo: ODST, you do get all of the fundamentals that deliver the story and gameplay that made Halo so popular the first time around. The sound design has also been given an update, delivering bigger sound and new effects for each weapon in the game. This might be a small thing, but the soundtrack has always been a major aspect for Halo, and now it sounds better than ever before.

There are a few issues to keep in mind when dealing with four games that were all made for older consoles. While each game has gotten a facelift, there are some graphics stutters that will appear from time to time. These include frame rate drops from the 60 FPS you start at and frozen enemies. It’s not a deal breaker in single player or co-op modes, but the frequency become far more irritating when you are trying to enjoy multiplayer.

When a research facility on Mars is overrun by demons, you’re left with one choice. Shoot your way through and survive, killing one demon after another. Whether you are wielding your trusty shotgun, keeping your pistol handy, or even tearing demons limb from limb, this game is built to be fun all by yourself.

Doom works on a pretty simple premise, running and gunning. The point is to shoot your way through the waves of demons chasing you down, picking up boosts and health packs along the way, and all without ever really stopping for a longer period of time. It’s a mixture of carefully choosing your shots to ensure you have enough ammo to survive, and desperately running across levels to find more health and ammo so that the demons chasing you don’t get the last laugh.

When you attack demons and manage to stagger them, they’ll be highlighted in blue or orange. When this happens, you can trigger a brutal physical attack that rips them limb from limb. On top of being extra bloody, this is also a good way to regain some health and save that precious ammo for when you need it most. One of the only real downfalls to gameplay is a dated mechanic that traps you in rooms until every demon inside has been vanquished. It’s a toss up as to whether this works for the game, or makes gameplay more frustrating.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus drops you into an alternate 1960s where Nazis won the second World War and took over the world. While plenty of things are outright terrible due to this, a rebellion is fighting back, and it’s time to kill the Nazi scum who have taken power.

Wolfenstein’s world is part of what makes it so compelling. Levels include locations like the bombed out ruins of New York City, and the walled ghetto that used to be New Orleans. Scattered through the world are pieces of history that bring it to life like Nazis conversating with members of the KKK, or the stories of families who moved here after the war was won. Combine this with the fantastic characters and voice acting of the entire cast and you have a world that is terrifyingly real for you to shoot through.

Combat mechanics are fantastic. You can use stealth to pick off Nazi officers and avoid reinforcements, or go in dual-wielding weapons and shoot every last enemy in sight. There’s a whole roster of different weapons including shotguns, machine guns, and pistols that can all be mixed, matched and customized as you play. There are also three different upgrades for each weapon, and a perk system that gives you upgrades for specific types of kills.

When it comes to over the top gameplay, there are few games that manage to blend action and hilarity as well as the Borderlands franchise does. The story revolves around Lillith recruiting people to help her protect Sanctuary from a cult called Children of the Vault demanding that citizens join them or die.

There are four new characters for you to choose from and each of them has their own set of skills. Moze, the Gunner, seems to have an affinity with guns, and the ability to jump into a souped up walking mech to mow through enemies. FL4K, the Beastmaster, can summon several small monsters that can leap and attack baddies. Zane Flynt, the Operative, seems to be successful in close range and has the ability to ghost walk through the things shooting at him to get a better angle. Last is Amara, the Siren, who appears to have an extra six arms she can use to pummel beasties and humanoid enemies alike.

Bottom line

Every first person shooter that made our list has different perks and a different style of gameplay. This makes it easier for new gamers to find just what they are looking for without having to try out a dozen titles in the process. Out of all of them, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege delivers the best experience.

This game manages to perfectly blend teamwork, tons of gameplay options, and thinking strategically to fulfill objectives to deliver a first person shooter that only gets better as it ages.
